The Arts and Crafts Movement in Birmingham and Worcestershire

Birmingham and Worcestershire were incredibly vibrant centres for the Arts and Crafts Movement. Discover the whats and whys in this talk!

The Birmingham School of Art kickstarted an Arts and Crafts revolution in the city that spread to the surrounding area. Craftspeople like stained glass artist Henry Payne, embroiderer Mary Newill, jewellers Arthur and Georgie Gaskin, and architects like Arthur S Dixon all trained at the School and applied the Arts and Crafts methods to their own practice in the area and further afield. In Bromsgrove, School of Art graduate Walter Gilbert started the Bromsgrove Guild, which became hugely successful - even supplying the gates to Buckingham Palace and Liverpool's famous Liver Birds. Art historian Kirsty Hartsiotis explores the story of art and architecture in Birmingham, Bromsgrove and beyond in this lavishly illustrated online talk.
